Local info
Coromandel Township is a 56 kilometre drive up the scenic Pohutukawa Coast from Thames and a short trip from Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga. There is a regular Ferry service operating from Auckland too and car hire available locally so you can enjoy the sights. We are also just 40 kilometres from Whitianga, so an ideal spot to base yourself and explore the Peninsula. Coromandel also has a taxi service available.
Coromandel is an old gold mining town, rich with heritage and offering some interesting and entertaining sights to enjoy. The town is styled in the Heritage fashion with the old buildings being retained and the new ones built in similar fashion, hence retaining our unique character.
The Coromandel community has a small permanent population with potters, artists, alternative lifestylers and folk who simply enjoy the laid back lifestyle Coromandel offers. In the summer months the population swells and the residents work hard to ensure our visitors experience the best the area has to offer. We have a number of excellent cafes and restaurants, offering a range of local produce on their menus and some excellent shops to meander through and enjoy.
